IN SUPPORT OF SUFFERERS OF MENTAL ILLNESS

{{brizy_dc_image_alt imageSrc=

During October 2020, I participated in an art challenge for which I designed a sticker each day of the month. I grouped every five days by a theme. Half of the themes were based on issues of human suffering, one of which being Mental Illness.

Millions of people not only struggle with the internal pain & suffering from within their own minds & psyches, they are forced to deal with stigma & misunderstanding from society. I hope to raise awareness of this issue and offer hope to those affected by mental illness.

STIGMA

Too often people are dissuaded from seeking treatment or help for mental illness and brain disorder problems because of society’s lack of understanding, empathy, or compassion! There is help, and there’s no shame in accepting it!

MEDICATION

Most mental illness issues stem from brain disorders. Sometimes biology and chemistry fail to work in concert to regulate the staggeringly complex complications of a human mind. By pairing appropriately dosed medication with therapy and support many sufferers of mental illness experience relief and are able to function well.

HOPE

Hope is amazingly powerful. With it people can hold on through the most dire circumstances and without it even the most feasible of solutions aren’t even attempted. Suffers of mental illness, take heart. Help is available and there are people who care. Even seed covered in ash and forgotten can rise from a situation seemingly without hope. If there’s even the smallest spark of hope, it might help someone survive.

DEPRESSION

Depression is just one of the many ways people can suffer from brain disorders and mental illness. Many people have experienced a difficult-to-escape sad feeling or have suffered situations that’ve left them in a prolonged state of grief, but there are people who struggle daily to just get out of bed. Depression sucks the joy out of life and dominates what’s left, often silencing people in their hopeless state.

COMMUNITY

Support, strength, love, acceptance, and significance are all wonderful benefits of being a part of a group of people committed to each other’s well being. For sufferers of mental illness - also struggling with stigma and societal misunderstanding - finding a community that understands and supports them is a life line and can make the difference between a life that spirals into oblivion or dealing with their illness and thriving.
